Experiments

Things I build for the fun of it. They aren't case studies, but they show how I like to work: start with an idea, direct the tools, and ship something that actually runs.

Matrix Brain

A rotating 3D brain drawn entirely from falling code, in the spirit of the film. Thousands of characters are placed along the folds of a procedurally generated brain, sorted by depth on every frame, and lit so the nearest ones glow brightest. Behind it, columns of code fall at their own speeds.

It is a nod to where my work lives: the space between human thinking and the machines we ask to help with it.

  • Built withPlain JavaScript and canvas
  • FootprintNo libraries and no network requests
  • AccessibilityStarts as a still image, with a play/pause button for the motion
  • PerformancePauses itself whenever it is off screen

Dice Roll Statistics

Pick a die, choose how many times to roll it, and watch the results settle into a distribution. Roll a D6 a few dozen times and the bars look lumpy. Roll it a thousand times and they start to flatten out, which is the law of large numbers in action.

  • Try thisRoll a D20 100 times, then 1,000 times, and compare the bars
  • Built withJavaScript, with each roll a random integer tallied per face

What Does a Color Sound Like?

Every hex color is six characters, and in this experiment each character is a note. Click a color box to hear it played on a glockenspiel, or build your own color from six note pickers and hear what it sounds like.

  • How it worksA through F are themselves, and 6 stands in for G, since hex has no G
  • Built withJavaScript and the Web Audio API, playing recorded glockenspiel samples
  • SoundsGlockenspiel samples by angstrom on Freesound (CC0)
